A Huge Celebration of VE Day and International Nurses Day!

To mark 80 years since Victory in Europe, everybody at Tŷ Llandaff came together for a heartwarming afternoon of remembrance, celebration and community. The entire home was decorated with Union Jack bunting, wartime memorabilia, and cherished photographs, setting the scene for an afternoon that paid tribute to those who lived through the war and the incredible spirit of that time.

Residents were treated to a traditional afternoon tea, which was lovingly prepared by our kitchen team. The menu was inspired by the post-war era, with nostalgic favourites such as spam sandwiches and classic blancmange. There was plenty of laughter as we chatted about the recipes from years gone by, and residents shared stories of how life used to be. Many recalled their own memories of rationing, growing up during wartime, or hearing stories from their parents.

At noon, we all took part in a respectful silence to honour those who served and sacrificed, and afterwards gathered around the television to watch His Majesty the King and the national parade, joining people across the UK in a moment of unity and remembrance.

The highlight of the day came with a live performance from a talented local singer dressed in full wartime costume, who delighted residents with favourites from Vera Lynn and other classics from the era. Smiles were evident and spirits were high as residents sang along, some waving flags and others quietly swaying to the familiar tunes that brought back so many memories.

As part of the day, we also encouraged residents and team members to bring in old photographs, letters or keepsakes from the war years. These prompted some moving conversations and gave everyone the chance to reflect on the courage and resilience shown by so many during those difficult times.

This event wasn’t just a celebration for us. It was a chance to come together as a community and to remember, respect and reminisce. For our residents, it provided a meaningful opportunity to connect with the wider community, sharing memories and creating new ones in a warm and supportive environment.

In addition to our VE Day commemorations, we also marked International Nurses Day where we recognised the compassion, care and dedication of our brilliant nursing team. As a small token of our appreciation, our nurses were gifted with thoughtful presents and treated to relaxing hand massages throughout the day. It was a lovely opportunity to say thank you for all they do, not just on this day, but every day of the year.
